Historical context

Marcus Annius Florianus, known as Florian, reigned briefly as Roman emperor in 276 following the death of his half-brother Tacitus. His rule ended after only 88 days, when he was killed by his own soldiers during a confrontation with the rival emperor Probus. This antoninianus was produced during his brief reign at Lugdunum, a major Roman city in Gaul that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis. The antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215, which by the late 3rd century suffered from severe debasement.
