Historical context
Marcus Annius Florianus, known as Florian, briefly served as Roman emperor in 276 after succeeding his half-brother Tacitus. His reign lasted only 88 days before he was killed by his own troops during a confrontation with the rival claimant Probus. This gold aureus, representing the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, was struck during Florian's brief 276 rule at Cyzicus, an ancient city in Mysia in Anatolia.
