Historical context

Marcus Annius Florianus, also known as Florian, briefly served as Roman emperor in the year 276. He assumed the imperial throne following the death of his half-brother Tacitus, ruling for only 88 days before being killed by his own troops during a confrontation with the rival emperor Probus. This coin is an aureus, the principal gold coin of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC until its replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
