Historical context

Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253 during the Crisis of the Third Century and elevated his son Gallienus to the rank of Augustus, dividing the governance of the empire between them. Gallienus ruled the west, while Valerian governed the east. Issued in Rome in 253–254, this silver antoninianus belongs to the double denomination introduced under Caracalla in 215, which was progressively debased to fund military loyalty amid escalating internal and external pressures.
