Historical context

Gallienus served as Roman emperor jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and subsequently ruled alone until September 268. Following Valerian's accession in September 253, the Roman Senate elevated Gallienus to Augustus. The two rulers divided governance of the Roman Empire, with Valerian administering the east and Gallienus directing the west during the Crisis of the Third Century.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 and thought to be valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor identified the double denomination.
