Historical context
Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, before ruling alone until 268. Valerian attained the imperial title in September 253 and had the Roman Senate elevate Gallienus to the rank of Augustus. The two emperors divided administrative control of the Roman Empire, with Valerian governing the east and Gallienus ruling the west.
Struck at Rome, this silver antoninianus was produced under the joint authority of Gallienus and Valerian. Introduced under Caracalla, the antoninianus was a denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished on imperial portraiture by a radiate crown. The obverse presents a radiate, cuirassed bust of Gallienus paired with the legend IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG. The reverse design depicts the figure of Laetitia, draped and holding a wreath and anchor, accompanied by the legend LAETITIA AVGG.
