Historical context

When Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253, he had the Senate elevate his son Gallienus to the rank of Augustus, dividing governance of the empire so that Valerian ruled the east while Gallienus governed the west. This joint reign lasted until Valerian was captured by the Sasanian Empire at Edessa in 260. The coin was produced at the western mint of Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
