Historical context
Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, before ruling alone until 268. Following Valerian's accession in September 253, the Roman Senate elevated Gallienus to the rank of Augustus, and the empire was divided between them, with Gallienus governing the west. His reign occurred during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era marked by military campaigns against Germanic tribes and internal usurpers.
Struck at Rome under the joint authority of Gallienus and Valerian, this bronze sestertius belongs to a denomination traditionally used in Roman commerce, valued at one quarter of a denarius. The legends "IMP GALLIENVS P F AVG GERM" and "VICTORIA GERM S C", paired with the depiction of Victory and a captive at her feet, refer to Germanic military victories won during the reign.
