Historical context

During the Crisis of the Third Century, Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253 and had the Senate elevate his son Gallienus to the rank of Augustus. The two emperors divided the administration of the Roman Empire, with Valerian governing the east while Gallienus took command of the west. Gallienus ruled jointly with his father until Valerian's defeat and capture at Edessa in 260.

Produced at the Lugdunum mint, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Such double denominations conventionally depicted the emperor wearing a radiate crown. By this period, soldier emperors relied on issuing antoniniani to pay troops and maintain their loyalty amid depleting silver supplies. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP GALLIENVS AVG" alongside the reverse inscription "RESTIT GALLIAR", which depicts Gallienus raising a kneeling woman with his right hand while holding a sceptre in his left.
