Historical context

Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253 during the Crisis of the Third Century, appointing his son Gallienus as co-emperor and elevating him to the rank of Augustus. Valerian divided the administration of the empire, ruling the east himself while Gallienus governed the west. This antoninianus was minted between AD 253 and AD 255 at Viminacium, a major city, military camp, and capital of the province of Moesia.
