Historical context

Gallienus ruled as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, governing during the Crisis of the Third Century. Following Valerian's elevation by the Senate in September 253, the empire was divided, with Gallienus administering the west while Valerian ruled the east. Operating within the western provinces, Gallienus won victories against Germanic tribes and usurpers, including destroying an Alemanni army at Mediolanum in 259.

Produced at the Mediolanum mint during this joint reign, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Antoniniani were widely produced by soldier emperors to pay troops and secure military loyalty amidst silver shortages. The obverse presents the emperor wearing a radiate crown, the distinguishing feature denoting this double denomination, accompanied by the legend "GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse depicts a radiate lion walking right alongside the legend "LEG IIII FL VI P VI F".
