Historical context

Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, before ruling alone until 268. Valerian divided the administration of the Roman Empire, overseeing the east while assigning Gallienus to govern the west. Operating during the Crisis of the Third Century, Gallienus won multiple military victories against Germanic tribes, including destroying an Alemanni army at Mediolanum in 259.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum during the joint reign of Gallienus and Valerian, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla, thought to have been valued at two denarii. The antoninianus typically featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate a double denomination. The reverse legend "VICT GERMANICA" accompanies a figure of winged Victory bearing a wreath and a trophy, referencing the emperor's military campaigns and victories over Germanic tribes during this turbulent period.
