Historical context

Gallienus was Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and ruled alone from 260 until his assassination in September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era characterised by civil war, invasions by Germanic tribes, and the secession of provinces. Following Valerian's capture in 260, Gallienus retained control of the central empire while contending with rival claimants.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The denomination indicated a double unit through the emperor wearing a radiate crown, as depicted on the obverse accompanied by the legend "GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse depicts a centaur walking right and drawing a bow, paired with the legend "APOLLINI CONS AVG".
