Historical context
Gallienus was Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and ruled alone from 260 until his assassination in September 268. His fifteen-year reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, a period marked by civil wars, military conflicts against Germanic tribes, and the secession of provinces.
Struck at Rome, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination first introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The antoninianus was distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor, indicating a double denomination. The obverse depicts Gallienus wearing the radiate crown with the legend "GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "CONSERVAT PIETAT" and illustrates the emperor standing with a sceptre and an extended hand above a kneeling figure.
