Historical context

Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and as sole emperor from 260 to 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by warfare against Germanic tribes, civil conflict, and the secession of provinces. Following Valerian's capture in 260, Gallienus retained control of the empire until he was assassinated during a siege at Mediolanum in 268.

This silver antoninianus was struck at the Rome mint under Gallienus. Originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, the antoninianus was a coin thought to have been valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination. By the third century, emperors required coinage to pay troops amid ongoing conflict. The reverse of the coin features a doe alongside the legend "DIANAE CONS AVG", while the obverse displays Gallienus with the legend "GALLIENVS AVG".
