Historical context

Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and subsequently ruled alone until September 268. His fifteen-year reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by widespread civil conflict, Germanic invasions, and the secession of provinces. Following Valerian's capture in 260, Gallienus retained authority over the empire and confronted multiple usurpers before his assassination outside Mediolanum in 268.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii. Characterised by the emperor wearing a radiate crown, the antoninianus underwent progressive debasement as soldier emperors continuously required coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty. The reverse design features Securitas standing draped and leaning on a column while holding a sceptre, paired with the legend "SECVRIT PERPET".
