Historical context
Struck at the Rome mint, this antoninianus represents a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse indicated this double denomination. Introduced as silver, the antoninianus underwent progressive debasement because silver bullion supplies dwindled while emperors required coin to pay soldiers and maintain their loyalty. The coin features the obverse legend "GALLIENVS AVG" alongside a reverse depiction of Securitas.
