Historical context
Gallienus was Roman emperor from 253 to 268, initially ruling alongside his father Valerian until 260, and subsequently ruling alone. His reign coincided with the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by warfare against Germanic tribes, internal rebellions, and the secession of provinces. Gallienus maintained authority from Rome while confronting several usurpers before his assassination during a military siege in 268.
This silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The denomination traditionally indicated its double value by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. A series of soldier emperors and usurpers required vast quantities of coinage to pay troops and maintain loyalty amid dwindling silver supplies, driving progressive debasement of the antoninianus. Struck at the Rome mint, this piece bears the obverse inscription "GALLIENVS AVG" and pairs Gallienus's radiate head with a reverse showing Pegasus and the legend "SOLI CONS AVG".
