Historical context
Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and subsequently governed alone until his assassination in September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era marked by Germanic incursions, internal civil wars, and the secession of provinces such as the Gallic Empire.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Gallienus. While the denarius had functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until its gradual replacement by the antoninianus under Gordian III, it continued to be produced in very small quantities, likely for ceremonial purposes. The obverse bears the emperor's laureate portrait with the inscription "IMP GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse depicts the personification Abundantia emptying a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "ABVNDANTIA AVG".
