Historical context

Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, ruling the western half of the empire during the Crisis of the Third Century. In 259, Gallienus destroyed an Alemanni army at Mediolanum, an important Roman city in Northern Italy. This silver antoninianus was produced at the Mediolanum mint in AD 259, featuring the radiate crown introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD to denote a double-denomination coin.
