Historical context

Gallienus governed the Roman Empire alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, taking responsibility for the west while Valerian ruled the east. In 259, he destroyed an Alemanni army at Mediolanum, an important city in northern Italy where this antoninianus was struck in the same year. Originally introduced in 215 AD as a silver double denomination, the antoninianus suffered repeated debasement over the 3rd century as emperors required coin to pay their troops.
