Historical context

Struck at the mint of Mediolanum, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The antoninianus featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate that it was a double denomination. Struck during a period when emperors required coinage to pay troops, the coin's obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the legend "IMP GALLIENVS AVG", while the reverse shows Gallienus seated with a globe and short sceptre alongside the legend "P M TR P VII COS".
