Historical context

Gallienus ruled as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and subsequently governed alone from 260 until September 268 during the Crisis of the Third Century. Mediolanum served as a key centre during his reign, where he destroyed an invading Alemanni army in 259 and later besieged the usurper Aureolus in 268 before being assassinated outside the city.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Mediolanum mint. The denomination was originally introduced under Caracalla as a piece thought to be valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. By the reign of Gallienus, successive issues had been progressively debased as emperors required coinage to pay soldiers and secure loyalty. The obverse features the radiate head of the emperor alongside the legend GALLIENVS AVG, while the reverse depicts Concordia seated with a patera and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription CONCOR AVG.
