Historical context

Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and ruled alone from 260 until his assassination in September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by civil wars, usurpers, and Germanic invasions. In 259, Gallienus destroyed an Alemanni army at Mediolanum, the mint city where this piece was produced, before facing further conflict there in 268.

The antoninianus was a Roman coin denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Originating as a silver coin, it was steadily debased to meet the financial demands of emperors paying troops amidst diminishing bullion supplies. Its double denomination was traditionally indicated by the radiate crown worn by the emperor, as seen alongside the obverse inscription "GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse displays the legend "FELICIT AVG" alongside Felicitas, who holds a caduceus and a sceptre.
