Historical context

Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and as sole emperor from 260 to September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by civil wars, Germanic incursions, and the secession of provinces. Gallienus maintained ties with Mediolanum, where he destroyed an Alemanni army in 259 and later besieged the usurper Aureolus in 268.

Struck at the mint of Mediolanum, this silver antoninianus represents a denomination introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD, thought to have been valued at two denarii. The coin features the radiate head of the emperor accompanied by the obverse legend "GALLIENVS AVG". The reverse depicts Pietas standing beside an altar with raised, outspread hands, inscribed with the legend "PIETAS AVG".
