Historical context

Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 until 260, and ruled alone until September 268 during the Crisis of the Third Century. Valerian oversaw the east while Gallienus governed the west. Mediolanum was a significant military centre for Gallienus, where he destroyed an Alemanni army in 259 and later besieged the usurper Aureolus in 268 before being assassinated outside the city.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Mediolanum. First introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was valued at two denarii and distinguished by the emperor wearing a radiate crown, as seen on the obverse accompanied by the legend "GALLIENVS AVG". During the third century, rulers required continuous coin issues to pay troops and maintain their loyalty amidst warfare and usurpers. The reverse depicts Providentia standing draped with a globe and sceptre, paired with the legend "PROVID AVG".
