Historical context

Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and as sole emperor from 260 to 268, during the Crisis of the Third Century. Mediolanum served as a key military centre during his reign; Gallienus destroyed an Alemanni army there in 259, and in 268 he besieged the usurper Aureolus inside the city before being assassinated during the siege.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Mediolanum mint, thought to have been valued at two denarii. The denomination, originally introduced by Caracalla in 215, distinguished double value through the radiate crown worn by the emperor. The obverse bears the radiate head of the emperor alongside the legend "GALLIENVS AVG", whilst the reverse features Securitas accompanied by the legend "SECVR TEMPO". Soldier emperors and usurpers of this era continuously required coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty amid persistent conflicts and shortages of silver bullion.
