Historical context

Gallienus served as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 until 260, and subsequently ruled alone until September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era marked by military confrontations against Germanic tribes and usurpers, alongside the secession of provinces. Gallienus maintained sole control of the empire following Valerian's capture in 260, governing until his assassination in 268 during the siege of Mediolanum.

Struck at the Siscia mint, this silver antoninianus represents a denomination introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The coin type regularly displayed the emperor wearing a radiate crown to denote its double denomination. During the third century, emperors and usurpers required vast quantities of coin to pay soldiers and maintain their loyalty amid shrinking silver supplies, leading to the progressive debasement of the antoninianus. The obverse bears the legend GALLIENVS AVG, while the reverse depicts Pax with the legend PAX AVG.
