Historical context

Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire alongside his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and subsequently as sole emperor from 260 until his assassination in 268. His reign coincided with the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by civil wars, military conflicts with Germanic tribes, and the secession of provinces. Following Valerian's capture by the Sasanian Empire in 260, Gallienus retained control over the central Roman state while suppressing multiple usurpers.

The antoninianus was introduced in early 215 as a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown worn by emperors to signify a double denomination, the coinage was struck in silver that underwent progressive debasement as emperors required coin to pay troops and secure military loyalty during recurrent internal conflicts. This issue features the obverse legend "GALLIENVS P F AVG", while the reverse shows the helmeted figure of Roma seated on a shield, holding Victory and a spear.
