Reverse: Libertas, draped, standing left, holding pileus in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand. Obverse legend: IMP C IVLIANVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: LIBERTAS PVBLICA.

Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Sabinus Julianus, known in English as Julian of Pannonia, was a Roman usurper who rebelled between 283 and 285 or 286 against Emperor Carinus or Maximian. At least one usurper of this name is attested by numismatic evidence. The aureus was the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD, struck here at the mint of Siscia during Julian's brief uprising.
