Antoninianus in silver struck at Siscia under Julian of Pannonia, AD 283–AD 286, catalogued as RIC V Sabinus Julianus 4. Obverse: Bust of Julianus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right, or bust of Julianus, radiate, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: The two Pannoniae, draped, standing front, one facing right, one left, extending right hands, figure on left holding ensign. Obverse legend: IMP C M AVR IVLIANVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: PANNONIAE AVG.

Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Sabinus Julianus, known as Julian of Pannonia, was a Roman usurper who rebelled between 283 and 285 or 286 against Emperor Carinus or Maximian, dying around 285–286. The antoninianus denomination, originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD as a double denarius characterized by a radiate crown, had become heavily debased by the late 3rd century AD as soldier emperors and usurpers required coinage to maintain the loyalty of their troops.
