Historical context

Laelian, recorded also as Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus, was a usurper who revolted against Postumus, the emperor of the Gallic Empire. His brief rebellion lasted from approximately late February to early June 269. This gold aureus was produced at the mint of Mainz, known anciently as Mogontiacum, a strategic military centre and the capital of the Roman province of Germania Superior situated on the Rhine.
