Historical context

This coin was produced in the Roman Empire under the authority of Marius at the Cologne mint. Marius was among the short-lived emperors and usurpers of the third century, a period when ruling figures relied on coinage to pay their troops and secure their loyalty while contending with depleted silver bullion supplies.

The denomination is an antoninianus, also termed a pre-reform radiate, which was introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and was thought to be valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor denoted this double denomination. Although initially silver, the antoninianus underwent continuous debasement because its intrinsic metal content fell short of its face value, contributing to widespread inflation across the empire. The reverse design features two hands joined with the legend "CONCORDIA MILIT" or "CONCORDIA MILITVM", while the obverse bears the inscription "IMP C MARIVS P F AVG". The coin ceased to be used by the end of the third century AD.
