Historical context

Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus was a Roman commander of Batavian origin who assumed the title and powers of Emperor around 260 after the Roman army in Gaul abandoned allegiance to Gallienus. Ruling over Gaul, Germania, Britannia, and Hispania in the splinter state known as the Gallic Empire, he governed for almost ten years before being murdered by his own troops. Postumus issued this aureus, the principal Roman gold denomination, between AD 260 and AD 269 from Cologne, which served as the capital of Germania Inferior.
