Historical context

This silver antoninianus was minted at Lugdunum. First introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was a coin thought to be valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. In this period, a series of soldier emperors and usurpers required coined money to pay their armies and maintain military loyalty. The obverse bears the inscription "IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts Postumus standing with a globe and spear alongside the legend "P M TR P COS II P P".
