Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Probus was Roman emperor from 276 to 282, securing prosperity for the inner provinces while withstanding repeated frontier invasions by barbarian tribes. This antoninianus was struck under his authority between AD 276 and AD 282 at Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône. Introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD, the antoninianus carried a radiate crown indicating a double denomination, though by the late third century it had been severely debased from its original silver standard.
