Historical context

This antoninianus was struck for the Roman emperor Probus at the mint of Lugdunum during the imperial period. Over the course of the third century, Roman soldier emperors required coinage to pay their troops and secure loyalty, leading to repeated monetary emissions across imperial mints.

The antoninianus was introduced in early 215 AD under Caracalla as a double denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. The radiate crown indicated this double value, though its silver content was initially equal to only 1.5 denarii. Dwindling bullion supplies and successive debasements reduced the denomination's precious metal content over the third century. On this issue, the obverse legend reads "VIRTVS PROBI AVG", while the reverse depicts Felicitas carrying a caduceus and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "TEMPOR FELIC" or "TEMPOR FELICI".
