Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Probus ruled as Roman emperor from 276 to 282, securing the inner provinces and countering frontier invasions before being killed during a military mutiny while preparing for war against Persia. This antoninianus was produced at Lugdunum, an ancient city founded in 43 BC that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis. The antoninianus denomination, originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 as a silver coin tariffed at two denarii, had experienced progressive debasement throughout the third century into a predominantly bronze issue.
