Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Probus was Roman emperor from 276 to 282, securing prosperity for the inner provinces while repelling barbarian invasions and handling internal revolts. The antoninianus, originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD, had suffered severe debasement by the late third century. This example was struck at Ticinum, where a Roman mint transferred from Mediolanum by Aurelian in 275 was operating during Probus's reign.
