Historical context

This coin was struck under the authority of the Roman emperor Probus at the mint of Ticinum.

The antoninianus was introduced in early AD 215 by Caracalla as a double denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor denoted this double value. Although originally silver, the denomination underwent progressive debasement throughout the third century because of depleted silver supplies from Iberian mines, the absence of newly conquered territories, and widespread inflation.
