Historical context

This gold coin was issued for the Roman Empire under the authority of Emperor Probus. The obverse identifies the ruler with the imperial legend "IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG".

Struck as an aureus, the piece belongs to the primary gold coinage system of ancient Rome. First issued sporadically in the Republic, the aureus became standardized during the Empire and served as the chief Roman gold denomination until the solidus replaced it in the early 4th century AD. It was originally valued at 25 silver denarii and 100 sestertii. The reverse iconography features Securitas, draped and either standing or seated left while holding a sceptre and raising a hand to her head, alongside the inscription "SECVRITAS SAECVLI".
