Historical context
This gold coin was struck under the Roman emperor Probus within the imperial period spanning from 27 BC to AD 476. It was produced at the mint of Siscia, naming the ruler in the obverse legend "IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG".
The piece is an aureus, the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD, when the solidus superseded it. Originally standardised during the Empire, the aureus was valued at twenty-five silver denarii or one hundred sestertii. While comparable in size to the denarius, it was heavier due to the density of gold. The reverse carries the legend "VIRTVS AVG" alongside a depiction of Mars, helmeted and walking to the right, holding a spear and a trophy while flanked on each side by a captive.
