Historical context
The issue forms part of the coinage struck during the imperial era when military rulers required steady coin production to pay troops and secure their allegiance amid diminishing supplies of silver bullion.
Struck as an antoninianus, the denomination represented a double-denomination coin originally introduced under Caracalla in early AD 215 and valued at two denarii. The coin features the obverse legend "IMP C M AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG" around a radiate bust of Quintillus, with the radiate crown conventionally distinguishing the denomination. The reverse depicts Securitas leaning against a column and holding a sceptre, accompanied by the legend "SECVRIT AVG".
