Historical context

This silver antoninianus was struck at Rome under the authority of Quintillus during the imperial Roman period. The Roman Empire produced coinage under a succession of rulers who required currency to meet state obligations, with the Rome mint serving as a principal production centre for official imperial issues bearing the emperor's official titles.

Introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, the antoninianus was a double denomination valued at two denarii and conventionally identified by the radiate crown upon the ruler's head. Over the third century, the denomination experienced progressive debasement from silver towards bronze due to dwindling bullion supplies and continuous financial pressure. This issue features the obverse legend "IMP C M AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG" and displays on the reverse the radiate figure of Sol holding a globe and raising his right hand, accompanied by the inscription "AETERNIT AVG".
