Historical context

Between AD 260 and AD 261, this antoninianus was produced at Antioch under Quietus. Antioch, founded in 300 BC on the Orontes River, served as the capital of Roman Syria and ranked as one of the largest and most strategically vital cities in the Roman eastern Mediterranean. The antoninianus was a Roman double denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, which originally contained silver but was progressively debased to fund imperial armies and usurpers amidst inflation.
