Historical context

This silver antoninianus was produced between AD 260 and AD 261 under Quietus at the mint of Antioch in Syria. By the mid-third century, antoniniani had become crucial currency issued by soldier emperors and usurpers to maintain the loyalty of their troops, with issues minted in major provincial centres such as Antioch on the Orontes River.
