Historical context

Regalianus was a Roman usurper acclaimed emperor by troops along the Danube river in 260 during the Crisis of the Third Century, in opposition to emperor Gallienus. Establishing his seat of power at Carnuntum, a Roman legionary fortress and capital of Pannonia Superior, he founded his own mint and issued coins featuring himself and his wife, Sulpicia Dryantilla. Regalianus conferred the title of Augusta upon Dryantilla to reinforce his legitimacy, and this antoninianus pairs the two figures, reflecting their joint imperial representation prior to their deaths around 260 or 261.
