Historical context

This coin was issued at Rome under the authority of Gallienus and his father Valerian. Valerian became emperor in September 253 and had the Roman Senate elevate Gallienus to the rank of Augustus. The two co-ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century, dividing administration between them until Valerian was defeated and captured at Edessa in 260, leaving Gallienus to govern through ongoing rebellions and civil strife.

Struck in silver, this piece is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 thought to have been valued at two denarii. On antoniniani depicting imperial women, the bust was placed resting upon a crescent moon. This issue portrays Salonina with the obverse inscription "CORN SALONINA AVG", while the reverse displays Vesta holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "VESTA".
