Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at Lugdunum under the joint authority of Gallienus and his father Valerian. Valerian became emperor in September 253 and had the Roman Senate elevate Gallienus to Augustus. The two rulers divided administration of the empire, with Valerian governing the east while Gallienus ruled the west during the Crisis of the Third Century, until Valerian's defeat and capture at Edessa in 260.

The antoninianus was introduced in early 215 as a double denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. Issues depicting women, typically the emperor's wife, displayed the subject's bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen on this coin for Salonina with the obverse inscription "SALONINA AVG". The reverse depicts a goddess within a temple, accompanied by the dedication "DEAE SEGETIAE".
