Antoninianus in silver struck at Mediolanum under Valerian, AD 256–AD 257, catalogued as RIC V Salonina 58. Obverse: Bust of Salonina, diademed, draped, on crescent, right.

Reverse: Juno, draped, standing left, holding patera in right hand and sceptre in left hand. Obverse legend: CORN SALONINA AVG. Reverse legend: IVNO REGINA.

Historical context

Valerian ruled as Roman emperor from 253 to 260 during the Crisis of the Third Century, appointing his son Gallienus as co-emperor. Cornelia Salonina held the title of Augusta as the wife of Gallienus and mother of Valerian II and Saloninus. This silver antoninianus was produced between AD 256 and AD 257 at Mediolanum, an important city in northern Italy where Salonina later died in 268.
